Monarch Headlines Fall Music3

DJ Khaled wears many hats: he’s a hitmaker, executive, music man, DJ, producer, father, mogul, author, actor, and friend. He raises the bar yet again with the release of his eleventh studio project, Father of Asahd. The album is named after his two-year-old son, whom he credits as co-producer, and it showcases Khaled at the peak of his musical powers. With a list of collaborations so expansive, this album could be made into an Avengers movie. This will surely be Khaled’s most powerful moment yet!

Donald-Glover-1DONALD GLOVER

Dubbed a “tropical thriller,” Guava Island has the formal ingenuity and freewheeling tonality of Glover’s television series Atlanta, but Glover and director Hiro Murai are playing in a very different key here. If anything, it’s an expansion, musically and stylistically, of “This Is America,” the widely seen and much-discussed Murai-directed music video for the song by Glover’s musical alter ego, Childish Gambino. (The song is remixed and restaged here.)

One of the most controversial personalities of the contemporary era releases “Sally Walker,” the lead single from her long-awaited sophomore LP In My Defense. Now an independent artist, Iggy is doing things very differently this time around. The twenty-eight-year-old star threw it back to her mixtape days, so it will be interesting to see if she sticks with that aggressive vibe or mixes in a little pop with a feature or two in the studio with J. White (“Bodak Yellow”).

Smith has been rising in the hip-hop scene since he was just fourteen, with the release of his first mixtape, The Cool Cafe: Cool Tape Vol. 1. But it wasn’t until he turned nineteen that Smith released his first studio album, SYRE, which surprised many listeners when it entered the Billboard charts at 23. All of this set Jaden’s fans up for ERYS (one of Jaden’s middle names spelled backwards.) This project delivers an explosion of sly, witty, vulnerable rap and melody, taking listeners on a joyride that’s perfect for the summer.

As Run the Jewels, Killer Mike and El-P pulled off a musical hat trick on their first three albums, slashing at the powers-that-be and firing up crowds on 2013’s Run the Jewels, 2014’s RTJ2, and 2016’s Christmas surprise RTJ3. In the past year, when not busy touring arenas with Lorde and Mitski, RTJ landed a song on the Venom soundtrack—and even when the two artists seriously disagreed on politics, they had each other’s backs. El, who also recently scored a film and got married, recently penciled in an RTJ4 release for this summer.
