R&B / Soul: Winter 2025

Monarch R&B/Soul Recommendations

JETT HOLDEN
The Phoenix

The Phoenix is a collection of raw, honest confessionals reflecting on Jett’s experience as a Black, queer man growing up in the rural South. His sincere and layered storytelling is at the forefront, from the unabashed love song “Backwood Proclamation” to the mythical metaphor in “West Virginia Sky” and the powerful coming out story in “Scarecrow.” The album has already garnered acclaim from Rolling StonePRIDEThe TennesseanNashville Scene, and Billboard, which hailed Jett’s sinister kiss-off “Karma” as “a wounded-yet-defiant, rock-fueled declaration.”

Launched in partnership with Thirty Tigers, Black Opry Records continues the mission of the Black Opry, an organization and touring collective focused on celebrating and supporting Black roots and country artists. A fitting first release, The Phoenix is a full-circle moment for both Black Opry founder Holly G and Jett, who had just given up pursuing a career as an artist when Holly stumbled upon his music online. Moved by the painfully earnest songwriting she heard in his unfinished track, “Taxidermy,” Holly convinced him to finish writing and record the song, which would later become the album’s opening track. The new label received early attention from BillboardVariety, and MusicRow, and a recent NPR Marketplace segment goes behind the scenes of the launch.

GEROGE PORTER JR. & THE RUNNIN’ PARDNERS
Porter’s Pocket

Porter’s Pocket, by George Porter Jr. & The Runnin’ Pardners, is a vibrant blend of funk, soul, and New Orleans groove. Released in 2024, the album showcases the legendary bassist’s mastery and innovation, honed through decades with the Meters and his solo ventures. The Runnin’ Pardners deliver tight rhythms, rich melodies, and infectious energy, with Porter’s basslines anchoring each track in deep funk roots. The album traverses themes of joy, resilience, and community, staying true to New Orleans’ musical heritage while embracing modern influences. Standout tracks highlight Porter’s distinctive playing, soulful vocals, and dynamic band interplay. Porter’s Pocket is a testament to Porter’s enduring artistry and his band’s ability to keep funk alive, fresh, and irresistibly danceable.

NIA SMITH
“Little Red Car”

“Little Red Car” is an aching belter of a song about a disappointing situationship with someone who seemed perfect for her. Exploring the complexity of a wish going unfulfilled, the song finds a sweet spot in its darkly romantic tone. Reflecting on the hurt and tender moments too, the track sees Nia contemplating just why she got so obsessed with a fantasy of someone who, retrospectively, she realizes she didn’t really know at all. Nia has been singing since her early years. Writing songs from the age of 14, she soon learned the guitar and piano before attending a succession of prestigious music schools, including the Brit School followed by ELAM. Her interest in music stemmed from her dad’s record collection playing around the house, and she was brought up on a versatile musical diet listening to a range of artists, from Aretha Franklin to Lauryn Hill, Adele, and Amy Winehouse.

THE WEEKND
Hurry Up Tomorrow

The Weeknd’s upcoming album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, is poised to be a groundbreaking conclusion to his trilogy, following the widely acclaimed After Hours and Dawn FM. These albums explored themes of heartbreak, redemption, and introspection, presented through lush, synth-driven soundscapes and cinematic storytelling. Thematically, Hurry Up Tomorrow is expected to delve deeper into emotional and existential narratives, potentially bridging the transformative arcs of his earlier projects. Fans anticipate a blend of introspection and grandeur, with his ability to weave complex narratives through music and visuals as a central focus.

MUSIQ SOULCHILD & HIT-BOY
Victims &Amp; Villains

Victims & Villains, the groundbreaking collaboration between neo-soul legend Musiq Soulchild and acclaimed producer Hit-Boy, seamlessly merges soul, R&B, and hip-hop. Released in 2023, the album explores themes of love, loss, and emotional resilience, blending Musiq’s signature velvety vocals with Hit-Boy’s modern, genre-defying production. Each track offers a vivid narrative, ranging from heart-wrenching ballads to upbeat, groove-heavy anthems. Musiq’s lyrical depth shines, while Hit-Boy’s innovative beats provide the perfect complement, creating a sonic journey that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Standout songs like “is it love, is it lies” and “beat of my own” showcase the duo’s synergy, making Victims & Villains a standout project for fans of authentic, emotionally rich music with a contemporary edge.

XAVIER DANIELS

BIO

Paintings are influenced by his experiences with brotherhood at both Morehouse and as a firefighter. In creating his art, he is actively thinking about the perception of black men and attempting to be a catalyst for a different view on the black male experience. According to Daniels, the conversations happening in popular culture about black males leave them invisible in discussions about themselves. The portraits of black men Daniels creates are large in an effort to symbolically assert black male presence into those conversations. His work has been shown around the world through Almine Rech and Richard Beavers Gallery. Xavier lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia.
