In Bethesda, a Maryland suburb adjacent to Washington, D.C., Dennese Guadeloupe Rojas, owner and principle designer of Interiors by Design based in nearby Silver Spring, Maryland, has created a luxurious multi-tiered retreat for relaxation and entertainment. A canopy of trees and rich green flora surround the home, owned by Simonetta and Bruce Thorne. At first the spacious terrace was a bit overwhelming for the retired couple, but after consulting with Dennese they were assured that they could achieve the serene oasis they envisioned for entertaining family and friends.

Gracious hosts, the Thorne’s serve a variety of savory grilled entrees from their well-appointed self-contained outdoor kitchen that is fully equipped for grilling, refrigeration and cleanup. This culinary island creates an anchor for the upper terrace. The barstools that surround the island kitchen makes serving guests convenient as well as creating a major gathering spot. For larger groupings a nearby island with stools is available for overflow. A round table under a cool blue umbrella invites outdoor dining for the couple on warm summer evenings. Large green planters, filled with colorful summer flowers, complement the stone raised beds filled with annuals on the lower tier of the terraces.

The gracefully curved lower terrace has abundant comfortable cool blue cushioned seating for guests to engage in conversation while sharing glasses of wine under the trees. In a curved recess of the terrace a large fire pit extends the outdoor season into fall when the trees are resplendent with colored foliage.
