The Fifth Avenue Hotel

A Return to the Gilded Age

Grandeur awaits just beyond the glass double doors with dramatic 40-foot ceiling heights upon entrance into the lobby of the Fifth Avenue Hotel. In the heart of NoMad (north of Madison) in New York City lies the unique collaboration and marriage of the past and future by the renowned firms of Martin Brudnizki Design Studio as interior designer and Perkins East- man as architect. The founder, hotelier Alex Ohebshalom, whose family has owned the property for nearly half a century, said, “The Fifth is the realization of many years of dreaming and discovery…. We are creating a one-of-a-kind experience; it is a whimsical, transformational escape in the heart of Manhattan.”

The history of the location adds to its allure. Originally the estate of Charlotte Goodridge, a noted socialite until her passing in 1902, the mansion later housed fine art before becoming a five-story, Renaissance-style palazzo bank designed by famed architectural firm McKim, Mead & White. Fast forward to today following a decade-long restoration project in collab- oration with Flaneur Hospitality, and the Fifth is a glamorous flagship for the brand in Manhattan. Capitalizing on its Gilded Age charm, a seamlessly integrated 24-story glowing glass tower by night emerged.

Inside, just beyond the concierge desk, is the focal point: a large-scale tapestry by artist Pae White titled Bugs and Drugs, a distinctive commission. Cabinets filled with crystals, trinkets, and curiosities from around the world captivate the eye. The luxury hotel houses a plethora of art, including photography works by Gordon Parks.

With thoughtfully tailored suites, the Fifth is old-world glamour with today’s modern touches throughout. The hotel features 153 guestrooms and suites, a select number with private terraces. Every room is meticulously curated, a feast for the soul—textured walls adorned by draping, antique mirrors, arched windows, and various blends of hues are a staple throughout the hotel, an inspiration from the travels of Ohebshalom.

Each turn, intentional or not, leads to dining like Café Carmellini, with mezzanine seating overlooking the main dining room peering through Phantom of the Opera lighting, an open kitchen in the company of towering trees together with butterscotch banquettes led by James Beard Award-winning Chef Andrew Carmellini, or cleverly discreet bars like the Portrait Bar, with more art, sophisticated cocktails to indulge the senses, and a stone fireplace. Additional corridors lead to exclusive lounges for hotel guests only, providing spaces to engage with the hotel’s rich ambiance. “The Fifth charts its own course, encouraging guests to slow down and fully engage with their surroundings.”

Whether visiting for business or planning a staycation, plan early as the Fifth Avenue Hotel caters to every luxurious whim. Butler services exclusively available for the 43 suites, luxury house car service, 24-hour in-room dining, and the soothing sounds of Nina Simone playing throughout the hotel will indeed keep residents feeling good. The Fifth Avenue Hotel is set to become the most obsessed-over destination for those seeking a truly exceptional stay in New York City.

XAVIER DANIELS

BIO

Paintings are influenced by his experiences with brotherhood at both Morehouse and as a firefighter. In creating his art, he is actively thinking about the perception of black men and attempting to be a catalyst for a different view on the black male experience. According to Daniels, the conversations happening in popular culture about black males leave them invisible in discussions about themselves. The portraits of black men Daniels creates are large in an effort to symbolically assert black male presence into those conversations. His work has been shown around the world through Almine Rech and Richard Beavers Gallery. Xavier lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia.
